Anita and I arrived back in Peru and are staying busy getting things back in order. Anita has learned to pace herself and not over exert herself physically; she still gets fatigued easily and her doctors said she would need at least a year to recuperate her full strength. For those of you that know her, you know that she works hard and long hours and won’t rest until “the work” is done. But as I said, she is learning to pace herself and rest when necessary. Upon arrival back in Peru, we had a great reception at the airport in Huánuco by about twenty dear friends that came out to greet us. It was quite a surprise. Then when we got to the church (we live in an apartment the church building) there was another great group to greet us. It was a wonderful “welcome home” for us.

Four days after unpacking and getting a lot of things put away we left for Lima again; this time to meet a small group from Tri-Cities Baptist Church of Johnson City, Tennessee. We took them to Cusco and then on to the Mission Hospital “Diospi Suyana” in Curahuasi. We are supporting, Silvia Rojas, a young lady from our church there as a medical missionary. We had a great visit and then we traveled back to Cusco in order to spend time with missionaries, Jason and Rebecca Reinhardt and the twins, Neomi and Natali. (These are the twins we took care of for seven months a few years ago). They sure love to see their “Nene and Papaw” come to visit!!

My Monday night Bible classes have resumed and I am enjoying them very much. Anita will soon start teaching her literacy classes again. She is very anxious to get back into that area of her ministry.

We are back working with the Calvary Baptist Mission here in Huánuco once again. Our first service back they also surprised us with a welcome back party. The Minix family, Jayson and Andrea, have done a wonderful job working in this new mission.  They are now back in the States on furlough and presenting their children, Austin and Lauren to their supporting churches.  Both children were born here in Peru during their first term.  The work is doing well, we had one young man accept Christ as his Savior on our second Sunday back in Huánuco. Our great God continues to bless and bless!

Thanks to the Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Charleston, West Virginia we were able to purchase a new motorcycle for Pastor Carlos Gonzales for use in his work in Oxapampa, Peru. He was overjoyed with the new motorcycle. Thank you pastor Mitchell and saints of Mount Calvary Baptist!!!

Happy New Year! Anita and I trust that this past year was a year of blessings for you and we pray that this year will be even more! This letter is being written from Florida where I am speaking at the annual Bible Conference of the Jordan Baptist Church, Pastor George Sledd. It is 80 degrees outside and we have the air conditioning going, what a blessing!

Anita is traveling with me and we just came from Elliot, Mississippi. From here we head up to speak at churches in North and South Carolina. We take our time and make sure she gets her rest, but she really does enjoy visiting with all of you.  December was a very busy month for me; I had the opportunity to travel in Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, and two churches in Kentucky and give a report of the mission work in Peru. All of the churches have been very gracious in their hospitality and love offerings for which we are very thankful.

One of the high-lights of the month of December was having both our son and daughter and their families with us for a few days. It was the first time we had all been together since the grand kids were born. Anita and I enjoyed so much our time with them. The added bonus was finding out that our daughter-in-law is expecting our third grand-child in June.

But the best news of all was when Anita went to the doctor for her final visit the last week of December and he told her that her tumor marker count was down (even below the accepted normal level). For this great news we are still rejoicing! She does not come back to see him again until September. Sooooo, we are heading back to Peru the 12th of February. Even thought 2008 was a difficult year because of Anita’s cancer treatments we count it a year of blessings for the many life lessons learned and for having our faith strengthened. We thank all of you for your never ceasing prayers and for your generous support during the year. Anita and I are both anxious to return home and get back to the work God has called us to do. May God bless you for your love and concern for the lost souls of Peru. Until next month.

Anita had her last radiation treatment on Tuesday, 5 of December! She is now healing from the blistering and recuperating from the constant fatigue. We see the doctors at the end of this month for some final blood work and hopefully dismissal. We have purchased our tickets to return to Peru for the middle of February.  We are both very anxious to return home. Please continue to pray for Anita as it will take months in order for her to recuperate her full strength. Some weekends she is able to travel with me but they usually leave her exhausted and needing to recuperate the following week. We take things day by day and moment by moment. Your prayers are still very much appreciated and needed.

During the month of November I had the opportunity to visit churches in Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. A few of these trips Anita was able to travel with me. Each church gave us a warm reception and showed great hospitality. It is always good to see old friends and enjoy the fellowship of our supporting churches. The Thanksgiving Conference hosted by New Hope Baptist Church of Dearborn Heights, Michigan was a tremendous blessing. Being able to sit and hear good preaching is such a blessing. On the mission field I usually preach wherever I go and when in the States I am usually traveling and giving a report each Sunday of the work in Peru. Conferences are a great opportunity for missionaries to recharge their batteries.  Anita and I are looking forward to two more conferences in Florida during the month of January.  May God bless you for your love and concern for the lost souls of Peru. Dear friends,

Greetings to all of you in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior! It seems that I have felt HIS presence this past month closer to me than perhaps ever before in my life. It is hard watching someone you love so dearly suffer so much with the awful side effects of chemotherapy treatment for cancer. It leaves Anita so weak and sick for about two weeks of the three weeks between treatments. She has only about one week of feeling somewhat strong enough to leave the house. But through all of this her faith in the Lord has remained strong and her passion to return to the Lords work in Peru has not weakened.

Her love and concern for others has not diminished either; she still finds time to call other cancer patients she has meet to encourage them. Her next and last chemo treatment will be the 15th of July. After about four to six weeks of recuperation, the doctors have a mastectomy planned and then possibly six weeks of radiation treatments to follow the operation. We don’t have dates yet for the operation so we will keep everyone posted when we have that information. Thank you all so much for your prayers, cards, e-mails, phone calls and love gifts. It is an awesome experience knowing that you are loved by so many people; every day at least one card comes in the mail with expressions of concern and encouragement. Truly we serve a great and loving God!

We would also like to thank each one that responded to last months letter concerning help for my travel expenses. The need was more than met and the surplus will be used to help some of our national missionaries in Peru and also to cover some extra medical expenses that our insurance will not cover. Thanks again for each of you that helped us with this need. The travel expenses are for my upcoming three week trip back to Peru. I will leave one week after Anita has her last chemo treatment and be back before her surgery.

When we left Peru in January for a six month furlough, we had planned to return the 9th of July. We made financial arrangements for our utility bills and national workers up until the end of June. So I need to go back and make new arrangements and also to get two new building projects started. Enough funds have been received to help the Grace Baptist church in Huánuco start their new building and also the Jordan Baptist church in Lima is now ready to begin construction on their new meeting house. God has been so good to help us be able to help these works. The work in Peru is growing and maturing for which we are thankful.

Speaking of new works; we still have the need of helping the Faith Baptist mission in Oxapampa with the need to purchase property. The total cost of the property is still $10,000.00. To date I have received $1500.00 designated for this project. Would anyone like to take this on as a mission project? Pastor Carlos Gonzales is the faithful national missionary that started this work and keeps it going. He lost his wife, Maria, last year to stomach cancer, but he and his grown children continue on in the work.

Oxapampa is in an area of Peru where we have never had a work before. It is the middle city of three small cities located in a large semi-tropical valley. Just recently the government built a decent highway allowing travel to Oxapampa possible. The small city has no airport or waterways; travel is only by land.
